After reading so many Linux-modem related postings, I found out that the only way I can make my notebook's modem to work is thru www.linuxant.com and if I don't pay for the driver's licensing fees, I can just use the modem up to 14.4kbps (good enough to send/receive fax at least). It's unfortunate that Conexant does not give out free drivers for Linux :(
Next step - try to dial-up to the web (at 14.4kbps) and see if I can make efax work :)
